Stuttering is a psychological problem

pierreroberge

In order to speak there are a lot of things that need to happen. We need to have a thought of what we want to say. Then we need to choose the right words to accurately translate that thought, then we need to enunciate every vowel and every consonnant to utter what we want to convey.

We don’t stutter when we sing, when we are along (most of the time) and so on. These facts are important because this tells us that our speech mechanism is fine. Our chromosome, our hormones, our biology is fine if not we could not speak fluently in ANY SITUATION.

This is why I say stuttering is a high order problem. It it in the mind, it is in our mind because we have episodes where we speak perfectly fluently. Nothing is wrong with our speech mechanism.

Yet, what is the scientific community doing research on? MRI, genes, …. they are looking at the lower order things of our speech mechanism, they are looking at details, while the cause of the problem are higher order things like : fear, perception of self, self-confidence, …

This is why, in my opinion, they will never succeed in solving it. If you look in the wrong place, you may never find what you are looking for.
